Created By You: Where Every Project Becomes a Personal Masterpiece
For over 25 years, Laura Whittington taught art and science to homeschool students, watching young learners discover their creative potential. As her classes grew larger and more popular, she realized the community needed something more than just occasional lessons. They needed a dedicated space where creativity could flourish any day of the week. That vision led her to open Created By You, a DIY art studio located at 1300 Central Boulevard, Suite D, in Brentwood, California.
"I am a homeschool mom, have homeschooled for over 25 years," Whittington explains. "Because the classes were getting to be so big, I decided to open a brick and mortar. We do a lot of work with students that are in charter schools and home schools as well. So it's nice to be able to have a place that provides something for everybody with all walks of life."
Eastern Contra Costa County Gains New Air Ambulance Base at Byron Airport
SkyLife 34 is the new medical helicopter base at Byron Airport, and will staff a pilot, flight nurse, flight paramedic, and on-call aviation mechanic.
SkyLife 34, a new medical helicopter base operated by Air Methods, has opened at Byron Airport to serve eastern Contra Costa County. The base will primarily transport patients to Kaiser Permanente hospitals and will expand its dispatch area once county EMS approval is finalized. With a crew of flight nurses, paramedics, and pilots, it joins an existing air medical base in Concord to improve regional emergency care.

Pittsburg Coach Among Those Named First Winners of Coach Beam Service Award
Pittsburg High’s Charlie Ramirez, pictured left, is one of the first-ever winners named for the Coach Beam Service Award
Coach Beam's Legacy Foundation has named Virgil Hart of Hayward High and Charlie Ramirez of Pittsburg High as the first winners of the Coach Beam Service Award, honoring coaches who lead with heart and community focus. Both coaches are recognized for their work in academics, mental health, and college readiness, and they'll receive stipends and grants for their programs. The foundation also gave honorable mentions to two other local coaches.

RP Books and several community partners are hosting Stories in the Square, a free book exchange and literacy celebration at John Buckley Square in Pittsburg on August 22, 2026. The event features free books for children, family activities with reading dogs and guest authors, and opportunities for the community to donate books. Organizers aim to promote literacy and bring the community together around reading.
