From County Classrooms to National Stage: 103 Contra Costa Students Earn National Merit Semifinalist Status
Over 100 Contra Costa Students have earned National Merit Semifinalist Status. They will compete for approximately 6,700 scholarships, with winners announced in Spring 2027
A total of 103 high school seniors from Contra Costa County have been named Semifinalists in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, representing 18 schools and one homeschool. Dougherty Valley High School led the county with 37 honorees, while the San Ramon Valley Unified School District accounted for 68 Semifinalists overall. These students will compete for approximately 6,700 scholarships worth nearly $24 million, with winners announced in spring 2027.

Wilson Delivers for District 11: Nine Bills and $159M for Families, Farmers, and First Responders
District 11 will receive over $159.3 million in state funding thanks to Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson, who also sent 9 bills to the Governor's desk
Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson closed out the 2026 Legislative Session by sending nine bills to the Governor's desk and securing over $159.3 million in state funding for Assembly District 11. The bills address issues ranging from climate change and housing permits to e-bike safety and genetic discrimination in life insurance. The funding will support local projects including Highway 37 improvements, gun violence prevention, farmworker housing, and environmental cleanup.

90% Chance of Very Strong El Niño: Newsom Mobilizes State Resources
To prepare Californians for a powerful El Niño season, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Sept. 22nd in order to mobilize resources and protect vulnerable areas more easily.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on September 22, 2026, to prepare California for a potentially record-breaking El Niño season. The proclamation mobilizes state resources, cuts red tape, and directs agencies to stage supplies, protect vulnerable communities, and ready infrastructure for floods, landslides, and coastal risks. Forecasters warn there's a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong El Niño, with a 75 percent chance it could reach historic strength.
